Summer Work Seekers Should Not Take up Unlicensed Estate Agency Work
In a recent episode of the popular programme Police Report, the Police Force appealed to young people to exercise care and discretion when applying for summer jobs. One of the segments featured a student summer worker without a valid licence distributing sales pamphlets and promoting properties on sale to a couple. Such activities are within the meaning of estate agency work under the Estate Agents Ordinance and a Police officer then appeared to explain that the youngster had committed an offence.
From time to time estate agents would engage individuals on a temporary basis for the purpose of distributing sales pamphlets on the street or in shopping centres. The management of these companies should clearly explain to applicants for such jobs the restrictions on what they may do, and should not assign any form of estate agency work to unlicensed employees. It must be reiterated here that both practising estate agency work without a licence and employing unlicensed individuals to do so constitute an infringement of the law.
